Water Quality at Aquapaws:
Why It Matters for Your Dog’s Health and Comfort
At Aquapaws
Canine Rehabilitation & Fitness Centre, we invest a substantial amount
of time, care and money into maintaining the water quality in both our indoor
heated swimming pool and our underwater treadmill.
Why?
Because clean, correctly balanced water is an essential part of providing a
comfortable and carefully managed environment for canine hydrotherapy and
rehabilitation.
Water
quality is about much more than how clear the water looks. Dogs introduce
natural oils, hair, dirt, saliva and other organic matter into the water, all
of which can affect its quality. Bacteria can multiply rapidly when conditions
allow, making regular testing, effective sanitisation and consistent
maintenance essential.
We want
every owner who brings their dog to Aquapaws to understand the work that
happens behind the scenes to help maintain our facilities.
Why Is Water Quality So Important in Canine Hydrotherapy?
Dogs attending hydrotherapy may be recovering from surgery, managing arthritis, rehabilitating
spinal injuries or living with other medical conditions. Some may also have sensitive skin or
healing surgical sites.
Maintaining appropriate water chemistry and effective disinfection helps reduce the risk
associated with waterborne microorganisms and supports a comfortable environment for dogs and the
people working with them.
Even water that looks crystal clear can contain microorganisms or have an incorrect chemical
balance. This is why we never rely on appearance alone. Water quality must be tested, monitored and
maintained consistently.

Daily Water Testing at Aquapaws
Water testing is part of our daily routine.
At Aquapaws:
- Our swimming pool is tested twice every day.
- Our underwater treadmill is tested 2 to 3 times a
day.
- We monitor water chemistry and sanitisation levels.
- We use a Chemigem automatic water management system on our underwater treadmill.
- A professional pool maintenance company visits our centre monthly to help keep our water
correctly balanced and our treatment systems on track.
Regular testing allows us to identify changes in water chemistry and make adjustments when
necessary. It also helps us monitor whether our water treatment systems are operating as
intended.

What Do We Test in Pool and Underwater Treadmill Water?
There are several important parameters involved in managing water quality. The exact targets and
testing schedule depend on the treatment system and the requirements applicable to the facility.
1. pH levels
pH measures how acidic or alkaline the water is.
Keeping pH within the appropriate range is important for maintaining effective disinfection and
helping minimise the risk of skin and eye irritation.
If pH moves outside the recommended range, it can affect how well some sanitising chemicals work
and may contribute to discomfort.
2. Sanitiser levels
Sanitisers help control microorganisms in the water.
Maintaining the correct residual sanitiser level is important because the water is continually
exposed to contaminants introduced by dogs, including organic matter.
Sanitiser requirements vary according to the treatment system, so levels must be assessed against
the appropriate operating standards rather than relying on a single universal figure.
3. Total alkalinity
Total alkalinity helps stabilise pH and supports the overall chemical balance of the water.
If alkalinity is not properly controlled, pH can become more difficult to manage, affecting both
water balance and treatment effectiveness.
4. Total dissolved solids (TDS)
Total dissolved solids represent the dissolved substances present in water. Monitoring TDS can
help assess changes in water quality over time, although it does not identify individual
contaminants or prove that water is microbiologically safe.
Together, these measurements help build a more complete picture of water quality. They are part
of an ongoing maintenance process, rather than a one-off check.
Our Chemigem Automatic Water Management System
Our
underwater treadmill is fitted with a Chemigem system to help regulate water
treatment and maintain the appropriate chemical balance.
This
technology is an important part of our water management approach, but it does
not replace manual testing or regular maintenance. Automatic
systems need to be monitored to ensure they are operating correctly. Regular
testing helps us check the condition of the water and identify any changes that
may require attention.
We
believe that combining appropriate technology with consistent hands-on
monitoring is an important part of responsible water management.
Why Professional Pool Maintenance Matters
In addition to our own daily testing, we have a professional pool maintenance company attend
Aquapaws once a month. Their role is to help us maintain the correct water balance, assess the treatment systems and
identify issues that may need attention.
Professional maintenance complements our daily checks and helps us keep our facilities operating
as intended. Maintaining water quality involves much more than adding chemicals. It requires consistent
monitoring, appropriate filtration, cleaning, equipment maintenance and adjustments when
necessary.
This ongoing investment is an important part of operating a professional canine hydrotherapy and
rehabilitation centre.
Does Water Quality Affect Your Dog's Comfort?
Yes. Water that is not correctly balanced may contribute to skin or eye irritation and
discomfort. Inadequate disinfection can also increase the risk associated with certain waterborne
microorganisms.
For dogs attending rehabilitation, maintaining a suitable environment is particularly important.
We want them to feel as comfortable as possible while swimming or exercising in the underwater
treadmill.
Water quality is only one part of providing appropriate care, but it is an important one.
Alongside our equipment, cleaning procedures and individual treatment plans, it contributes to
the overall environment in which rehabilitation takes place.
The Investment Behind Every Swim
Keeping a canine hydrotherapy pool and underwater treadmill in good condition requires a
substantial ongoing investment.
At Aquapaws, this includes:
- Twice daily water testing of our swimming pool.
- Two to three times daily testing of the underwater treadmill.
- Our Chemigem water management system.
- Regular professional pool maintenance.
- Ongoing cleaning and equipment care.
- Time and resources devoted to monitoring and maintaining water quality.
These are the behind-the-scenes tasks that help us provide a carefully managed environment for
the dogs in our care.
When your dog visits Aquapaws, you see them swimming, exercising and working towards their
rehabilitation goals. What you may not see is the ongoing work involved in maintaining the water
and equipment they use. We believe this attention to detail is an important part of providing a professional service.

Your Dog's Wellbeing Is Our Priority
Whether your dog is recovering from cruciate surgery, rehabilitating following spinal surgery,
managing osteoarthritis or participating in a structured fitness programme, we understand the
trust you place in us.
